Welcome to one of our explanation videos: what are crowns? There is a lot of confusion about what a crown is and what it isn't. What is a same day crown? When does a lab make a crown? Do I need a crown? Can I place a crown on front teeth?
Let's clear up the confusion.

Crowns are used in dentistry when the tooth is structurally compromised. Dental crowns help hold together weak teeth like hoops around a barrel. Cracked tooth, large cavities, old filling breaking down. When one of these things happen a crown may be recommended.

Can crowns be used for cosmetics?

What is the procedure of a dental crown?
First any cavity or failing filling should be removed. The shape of the tooth is rebuilt with a strong filling material. The tooth is then reduced, 360 degrees, to make room for the crown. An impression is taken, either digitally or old-school with impression material, and a temporary crown is made. If the crown is made "same day" a temporary may not be needed but this takes several hours.
A dental lab makes your custom crown to the dentist's specifications. This can take 1-6 weeks depending on the lab, the difficulty, etc.
The second appointment the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is checked and cemented in place.

You should be able to treat your crown like a normal tooth.
