Knee immobilizers, functional braces, and hyperextension bracing have all been described as options in the immediate postoperative period.
The benefits of bracing in the early postoperative period has been demonstrated primarily for swelling, and ORM because bracing does appear to help achieve full knee extension.
Benefits of bracing following ACL-R are decreased swelling, improved ROM, protection of the graft, improved proprioception and improved walking kinematics to regain a normal gait pattern .
The use of functional bracing following ACL-R has not had a clear role in the late phase of rehabilitation.
Routine bracing to achieve satisfactory objective outcome measures of stability, strength, single leg hop performance, and ROM has been under scrutiny as the literature has not demonstrated that braces are effective at achieving those goals.
Research has shown functional bracing appears to help prevent re-injury in skiers.
