Behind The Scenes:
Once I started changing the titles every so often, the 7 video pattern just kind of happened. I also wanted a break from crediting other creators in each video, so I came back to the in-house approach for a while.
Visuals: Still using IG Reels filters here, but experimenting with different color lighting to create different patterns. Namely a salt lamp & a ring light in a dark room for these shots. The first clip is actually a filtered overhead cloud filmed outside. It's a nod to the cloud lapses of the first #TitleSequence, but also to the horizontal bars that start the 4th Doctor's 70's opening. Though it may not be obvious, this opening is a tribute to several versions of 70s & 80s WHO openings. The first few edits match those in the 4th Doctor's, but instead of the TARDIS coming toward the viewer, I have the D.O.G.H.O.U.S.E. moving away and fading through the nebula/time warp/whatever you want to call it. The Logo & Face Gimmick are another attempt at the 1980-1986 (4th, 5th, & 6th Doctor) sequence. More on that below. The spiral is a filtered shot of Beast's Noxgear Lighthound (check my bio link for the best price for yours!) which nods to the colorful 6th Doctor opening and the spiral galaxy in 7's. This time, the Logo itself becomes the transition to the title card.
Music: Still 'Motion Sickness' & 'Fiend_Sting', still iconic to The Beaster.
Logo: As mentioned in Title Sequence 2, there's a particular 70's-80's era visual effect I really like. For lack of a better term, I call it an Echo Cascade. I got as close as I could with the tools I had, and I think it looks pretty good. However, I had to speed the clip up a little too much to fit with the title card sting so most of the nuance of the original version got lost. See Face Gimmick below for details on how I did it.
Face Gimmick: It was time to move on from Flat Beastie as that picture was already several years old even by the time I used it for the first Beaster Who. I also wanted something a little more authentic to what the character had become. The photo I opted for was taken around Episode 05, so still not exactly recent. Now he's in costume and looks brave, determined, and optimistic. When I used it in Episode 13, I knew it would it be the next title photo. Making the Echo Cascade in Corel was done by making about 15 overlay layers. I started with the most zoomed in/largest, then copied the picture to the next layer, shrunk it by a standard amount, recentered it, then rinse/repeat until I got to the smallest one in the last layer. All of this was over a chroma green background that I could key out later. Lastly, I adjusted the timing of the intermediate layers so the movement would be smooth. I processed a video file I could use as a separate asset so Corel wouldn't get glitchy or crash on me when making the full credits. I used the default large-to-small cascade for the ending credits, and simply reversed the clip for the opening so it goes from small-to-large. Is it just like what was on TV? No, but close enough to still look cool for a small dog channel. I did the same process to cascade the Logo.
FYI: Apparently Dawson Dweeb's gold shutter shades were on a table and got into shots. I was hoping they would have blurred out a little more but there they are in plain view. Distracting? Sure, but I guess it makes sense since he's a part of the bookends of this mini era.
Alternate Versions: Episode 20 is the second season finale. I get a little more ambitious with the finales, and hopefully it shows. This also felt like an opportunity to give this sequence a proper send-off, just in case this ends up being the end of our story for a while. Some subtle sound flourishes were added to the opening during the Face cascade and the Logo flare. This gives a 'Special Edition' feel to the proceedings. The lead in to the ending features a 60th Anniversary celebration of the various Doctor Who themes by Dalekium, available for use via Creative Commons. The Doctor Who cliffhanger sound opens 'Sixty Years', here replacing 'Fiend_Sting'. As a one-time thing, I love how it makes things feel a little more official. The extended coda nods to all 3 Beaster Who sequences before briefly overlapping the Doctor Who melody seamlessly with 'Motion Sickness' for the ending credits.
Final Thoughts: After some time away from it, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. The ending credits are fine, but the opening feels a little too chaotic. It's hard to know where to focus, and maybe that's why some of these stories didn't do as well with views & retention? Still, there's a retro vibe here that I do really enjoy.
NOT FOR REUSE WITHOUT PERMISSION, THANK YOU!
