GWM Haval Jolion 2025 review: Is the petrol version of the cheap Chinese small SUV a good buy?

The 2025 GWM Haval Jolion range introduces some major changes to the relatively affordable Chinese small SUV – but they're not universal. While the Hybrid variants benefit from a facelift that ushers in an almost completely new coupe-style body, the petrol-powered versions do not, retaining the more traditional wagon shape of their predecessors.

In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week living with the petrol-powered Lux variant, which is a mid-range offering in the new Jolion line-up. As such, it finds itself going tyre to tyre with the soon-to-be-replaced MG ZS and Mitsubishi ASX, among other models.

So, what does the Jolion Lux bring to the table in petrol form? Well, as mentioned, not a lot has changed for 2025, but buyers still get a 105kW/210Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, which sends drive to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
