A FISH, aka mudskipper, is the only fish that can live on land and in the water. I know it sounds weird, but this is possible because they breathe air. And they have their eyes on top of their heads because they see better in the air than underwater, which takes me to a mind-blowing information: they blink just like humans!!! I know we usually take bilking for granted, but it does have a complex purpose. It keeps our eyes wet, clean, and safe from harm. And apparently, mudskippers do it for the same reason. Researchers observed that they blink when their eyes are dry, even though they don’t have tear glands like us. They make their eyes wet by mixing slimy skin mucus with water.
Studying where blinking came from has been tricky. Fossils don't keep the soft parts we need to understand it. But mudskippers give us new clues. This is amazing because it suggests blinking was important when our ancestors moved from water to land.
