Milan's men's fashion week continued with TRUSSARDI, VALENTINO AND JOHN RICHMOND unveiling their new creations for spring/ summer 2001.

As usual with Trussardi, the emphasis is on leather, and the softer, the better. Beatrice Trussardi (Nicola Trussardi's daughter) describes the collection as "tradition through innovation". Drawing heavily from the 'Talented Mr Ripley' era, these are clothes made for super-rich playboys.

Trussardi showed pinstripes, canvas and silks, in a collection based on the traditional "must-haves" of a gentleman's wardrobe. Elegance was the order of the day. But amongst the tailored casuals and tuxedos, cherry red leather hipster trousers were a nod to modernity.

One of the highlights of the collection is a black smoking jacket made of python leather. It's an elegant version of the jacket worn by Nicolas Cage in the cult movie 'Wild At Heart'. Rock star STING has reportedly already placed an order for one.

Perma-tanned celeb couturier VALENTINO held court in his usual inimitable fashion before launching his catwalk show. Valentino's new collection is inspired by water and sea, and not surprisingly, is strong on shades of blue and green.

The designer has chosen classical linen for trousers and jackets. Beachwear comes in the form of micro shorts, and is suitable for bronzed Adonis-types only. Shiny suits in shades of olive topped off with sparkly ties is the look for evening wear.

Biker and rock chic have long been favourite themes of JOHN RICHMOND, and his latest collection is no exception to the norm. Richmond's bad boys strode onto the catwalk in flamboyant shades of scarlet accessorised with golden chain belts. As always with Richmond, black satins and leather predominated, with touches of glam silver and decadent gold. Shirts were worn open, with sleeves were either ultra-long or non existent.

Richmond's models were adorned with dramatic fake tattoos, which the designer painstakingly stuck onto their skins himself. Richmond spent two hours before the show preparing the models for their turn on the catwalk.
