In the fifth century BC, the ancient maritime power of Carthage launched one of the most ambitious exploration voyages in recorded history. Led by Hanno the Navigator, a fleet of Carthaginian ships sailed beyond the Mediterranean, through the Strait of Gibraltar, and down the Atlantic coast of Africa into regions unknown to the ancient world.

This journey is preserved in a rare historical document known as The Periplus of Hanno, one of the earliest surviving firsthand exploration accounts. The text describes the founding of new settlements, contact with unfamiliar cultures, massive African rivers filled with crocodiles and hippopotamuses, mysterious fires burning along the coast, and what may be the first written description of gorillas in human history.

As the expedition moved farther south, the environment changed dramatically from desert shores to tropical forests. The sailors witnessed an erupting volcano rising from the sea, likely Mount Cameroon, placing Hanno’s voyage deep into the Gulf of Guinea.

For centuries, historians in Europe debated whether this voyage was real or exaggerated. Modern research, however, shows that Hanno’s descriptions closely match real African geography and ecosystems, suggesting that Carthaginian sailors reached farther south than any Mediterranean civilization before them.
