Fugue-Kriti integrates Carnatic and Western classical traditions. In the final movement (Charanam), the music moves from order toward turmoil. It opens with a driving ostinato pattern in the strings, establishing the foundation. The intricate texture of counterpoint takes form through the Carnatic melodic lines of the violin, veena, and flute in raga Hemavathi, then in raga Vachaspathi. But the dissonant strings grow increasingly chaotic, leading to a turbulent climax with a timpani crescendo.
This original composition in 3 movements is from the album Confluence: Raga and Counterpoint. The album's music brings the intricacy of Carnatic ragas and gamakas (expressive inflections and curves) into the architecture of Baroque counterpoint and Western harmony. (Counterpoint is the combination of multiple independent melodic lines.) Fugue-Kriti draws on the structure of both the Western fugue and the Carnatic kriti.
