Aarhus city centre
26th May 2018. (Central European Summer Time) The Australian guy was in the common area at 2.00, he was waiting for his flight and had nowhere to go. There was sunlight even at 4.00 in the morning, it made it easier for me to get out of bed. Here in Denmark, just like in Germany, you can buy cheap train tickets but these tickets are not flexible. I left the hotel at 6.00 in the morning. I walked to the train station using the same route from yesterday. My train leaves at 7.00, bound for Århus, Denmark's second largest city. the ticket was booked online well in advance for DKK99. Most foreigners who come to Denmark probably visit Copenhagen only so this is a good chance to see the real Denmark.
On Denmark's current banknotes, there are pictures of various bridges across the country. Speaking of Danish banknotes, I collect banknotes but they must be in mint condition. On this trip I managed to collect DKK200, DKK100 and DKK50 banknotes. I carry them in my hand together with all the tickets I have accumulated throughout the trip. We passed through many tunnels and bridges because Denmark consists of many islands. This is a very green country, most of the stops along the way were just towns and hamlets. At one stop, two teenage girls came on the train wearing fancy dresses. The train arrived at Århus train station at 10.15, I asked the girls why they were wearing these clothes, they said they have some kind of festival in Aalborg, the terminal station.
The first thing I did was to check where I catch the bus to the airport. Århus is a lovely city, it is very small and probably has very little tourism. I enjoyed have lunch by the side of the pavement I ordered the tortilla Española, DKK140. It was easy to read the menu even if it is in Danish, most of the words such as omelet, kartoffel, brød, avokado, tomat, citron look like English, German, French, Spanish words.
I really enjoyed Denmark, especially the transport, the blue skies, the healthy population. At 13.30, I boarded the bus to Århus airport, DKK115. Today I am flying to London Stansted with Ryanair, DKK96. This airport has be the smallest airport I have ever seen, they only have 10 flights per day. I thought it would be a full flight, I wasn't assigned a window seat and I wanted to get a view of England when I land. I was the last person to board the plane so I grabbed a right hand window seat. We took off at 18.10. The weather was cloudy over England but I could still recognise the Essex coastline. It has been 5 years since I was last in the UK. The flight time was 1 hour and 15 minutes. Denmark is one hour ahead of British Summer Time, we landed at 18.25 local time.
Since I need to visit some relatives here I bought a SIM card at the airport for GBP2 and topped it up by GBP5. I booked an Easybus ticket online, it was just GBP1.99 from the airport to London Victoria Coach Station, departure time was at 19.55. Although it was sold by Easybus, the actual bus was a Mercedes Benz run by National Express. We passed The Tower of London on the way. 5 years ago when I left the UK, I took a coach from Victoria Coach Station to Paris and then all the way to Hong Kong. Today, I am back at the same coach station. I bought fish and chips nearby since I have not had English food for a long time, GBP10.95. I took one subway to South Kensington Station, GBP4.90. It started to rain before I found the hostel. I was waiting to check in but this Japanese girl was taking too long. Later on in the evening, I met Risa outside the hostel. This hostel has to be the best bargain in London, it is located 5 minutes walk from the French Consulate literally the centre of London, GBP15 per night. Today I took 2 buses, 1 flight, 1 train and 1 subway. Total cost in Denmark was DKK549.5, DKK294 was the amount spent on food. In the UK tonight, I spent GBP37.22, out of which GBP12.84 was food expenditure.
