The 1977 Peugeot 604 is now one of only eight left on British roads. The car was designed to attract well-heeled drivers away from BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, and Volvo 164s. However, it was always a rare sight in the UK. The 604 had a 2.7-liter PRV engine co-developed with Renault and Volvo, but due to the 1973 fuel crisis, it was reduced from eight to six cylinders. Peugeot used the platform and doors of its 504 model to save development costs, but the Pininfarina bodywork had no resemblance to the smaller model. The 604 was intended to be the French government's ministerial car of choice, and it was favored by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. However, it never achieved its domestic sales projections due to its engine's excessive thirst and lack of low-speed flexibility. Production of the 604 ceased in November 1985 after 153,252 units. Today, the 604 is considered a connoisseur's car, known for its comfort and smooth ride. It was praised for its elegant design and was compared favorably to the Jaguar XJ6 and BMW 528. However, the car had reliability issues, and many owners reported breakdowns and fires.
