Classic EverQuest Getting a Modern Engine : Lantern EQ

Описание к видео Classic EverQuest Getting a Modern Engine : Lantern EQ

What happens when you take a Classic MMORPG like EverQuest and put it in a modern engine like Unity? We are about to find out as Project Lantern or Lantern EQ is in the works and currently available for EverQuest fans to test and report bugs. Let's look at what this modern engine port of EverQuest means, the point and the future of EverQuest and EQ Emulation .. Enjoy!
So first up, what is LanternEQ? It is a project to bring EverQuest into the Unity engine. So it's a recreation of classic Everquest both client and server into Unity to allow for game customization. As it stands, EverQuest emulation servers are limited in what they can do due to restrictions in coding and the client itself and to be quite frank, an extremely outdated engine. Bringing EverQuest to Unity would allow limitless opportunities from graphic enhancements to completely new and innovative solutions to common issues with EverQuest. For example, if DayBreak were to be the ones to take EverQuest into a more modern engine, it would mean MASSIVE amounts of possibilites, basically, you think it and it would be possible. Lantern EQ bringing EverQuest into Unity makes this project the most complete client reimplementation to date. This is of course NOT daybreak doing this, but a fan, but let's continue.
You can test out what they have so far and I have a link down below, but just keep in mind, it is still a work in progress.
Now by bringing EverQuest over to Unity, it allows complete control over teh client and source meaning that EverQuest could be bent and shaped in any way, fixing bugs or adding functionality. All the other EverQuest emulated servers are ran under closed sourced clients. This project would not have those limitations. The developers of Lantern EQ, once it is completely integrated, will have the ability to fully implement the engine in any way they see fit including graphic upgrades and UI fixes.
As of now they are interested in teh original trilogy assets, so Classic EverQuest along with Ruins of Kunark and Scars of Velious. However, should they choose to later on add additional expansions they could.
LanternEQ is focusing on Windows, Mac and Linux currently for development but they don't dismiss the possibility of other platforms being supported in the future.
There are currently 5 developers working on this project and they are looking at running an online and offline single player mode. Latern EQ will also support a standalone server mode for those that want to host their own server.
There is no current timeline for this EverQuest project to be completed, but if we look at their updates, they seem to be fairly far along and moving at a fast pace. I have linked their roadmap in the description if you would like to check it out for yourself, but it is fairly vague on time frames.
There are even some former EverQuest developers who are following this project, excited to see where it goes and what it accomplishes, and this is easy to understand as this is quite possibly the most exciting thing anyone has ever tried to do with this classic MMO, and we can all imagine the possibilities of where it could go. We could be looking at a fun, more modern way to experience Norrath, or we could be looking at new zones and content that have never existed before, or just simply an evolution of EverQuest that makes it more appealing for new players to experience it. The possibilities are truly endless.
If you are interested in supporting the project, the developers say the best way is to go get it, play it, test it and report bugs so they can make it more stable and they are not accepting donations.
