In the Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto, Italy, Girolamo Lombardo and his workshop carved prophets and sibyls into marble during the 16th century. These figures sit enthroned around the sacred shrine, guardians of one of Christianity’s most venerated sites.

Each prophet, drawn from the Hebrew Bible, and each sibyl, from the pagan world, was believed to have foretold the coming of Christ. Draped in heavy robes, scrolls in hand, they are more than statues — they are voices turned to stone.

Created between 1520 and 1580, Lombardo’s prophets embody the Renaissance union of faith, prophecy, and sculpture. They remain eternal witnesses, carved in silence, their marble eyes cast beyond time.
