Last year, I was invited to join an incredible expedition to the lost world of the Makay Massif in Madagascar. I was invited on the trip by a French explorer called Evrard Wendenbaum and his NGO Naturevolution, whose main objective is to protect our planet's last remaining lost worlds.

I visited this incredible region for the first time in 2018 with Allibert Trekking and I was being given the opportunity to experience its magic once again. However unlike my first visit which was focused on hiking tourism, I was coming back to tell an important story on conservation. The Makay is a haven of biodiversity in a country which has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. It has a record number of indigenous species: plants, birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians, which are not found anywhere else on the planet. For the past decade, Naturevolution has been working with local communities to ensure the fragile ecosystem stays in contact while the surrounding population still thrives. This short film tells the story of Naturevolution has done and is currently doing to preserve the Makay.

In total, we spent more than a week in 4x4s traversing some of the more difficult roads in the heart of the rainy season. We all dealt with quite a bit of discomfort throughout the trip: the unbearable heat, constant flies, 12 hour days of walking, sinking sand in the rivers, torrential downpour rains while camping, etc. But in the end, we found pleasure in this discomfort. We were a team & fought through the hardships together. Just as the world seems to be doing now. Change & discomfort requires us to search for solutions & evolve as humans. I can only hope that this pandemic will bring the best out of us & we will learn a lot about what needs to be done to take better care of ourselves and the precious planet we call home.
