Golf (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 sports game for the NES, Golf.

Golf is as simple and as old-school a golf game as you'll find on the NES, but like the other the sports games featured in the system's black-box launch line-up, it established the template upon which an entire genre was built.

The three-click power meter, the shift in view when putting, and the large animated sprite of Mario/Ossan hitting the ball might not seem like a big deal four decades later, but that's only because nearly every golf game that came in the wake of Golf's release incorporated its gameplay innovations.

It's simple, but it has its charms - I get a kick out of those sound effects used for the ball (ooooOOOOoooo) and the messages (oot oot oot), and the graphics are clean and colorful - and it's still far more playable than you'd expect from a four-decade-old golf game.

And did you know there was a PC88 port by Hudson? (   • Nintendo no Golf (PC-8801) Gameplay -...  ) Wild, huh?
