Although he is now considered a very prominent figure in Christian history, he was at the very bottom of society—lower than a fisherman. Why? Because he was a publican. So despised were they “that many Jews treated them as ritually unclean, like lepers.” And if that wasn’t enough, “His money was not accepted as alms, and his evidence was not accepted in courts of law.” Publicans were truly the ultimate outcasts.
