Looking to save a little money on your next big trip? From group discounts to walking tours, here are eight ways you can cut costs while traveling—without sacrificing entertainment, fun, and adventure.

1. Lose the crowds. Consider visiting less popular destinations instead of major attractions. There are plenty of locations throughout the U.S. that have just as many fun things to do and see, without the crowds or the price tag.

2. Walking tours. Many walking tours are free or you pay what you feel the tour was worth. These tours are great options for large cities, national and state parks, and other big attractions.

3. Ask for discounts. While military and senior citizen discounts are often advertised at businesses, it doesn’t mean they’re the only discounts offered. Always ask if other discounts are available before booking excursions and activities. Discounts for teachers, students, first responders, and others are often offered but not promoted.

4. Public transportation. When possible, use public transportation to get around your destination. Buses, trains, subways, and even hotel and campground shuttle services are almost always low-cost or free.

5. Shoulder seasons. Making your trip plans around less busy seasons will not only reduce the crowds but will also save you money. Activities, campgrounds, hotels, and more are often less costly during off-seasons and shoulder seasons.

6. Groupon. Browse Groupon before your trip for discounted activities for that area, and be sure to ask for group discounts prior to booking for better rates if you’re traveling with a larger group.

7. Annual passes. If you know you’re visiting a location or type of destination multiple times a year, consider purchasing an annual pass to save on each visit. Instead of watching entrance fees stack up, these passes can act as a one-time fee for access to that destination all year long.

8. Skip souvenirs. Instead of bringing home souvenirs, take pictures and make notes of all the places you visit. These memories will last much longer than the items in a souvenir shop—plus they’re free.
