Is physical intimacy impossible after ostomy surgery?

It's true that a person may feel uncomfortable about their anatomical changes, and that includes during intimate moments! If you find yourself having difficulties adjusting during these moments with your ostomy, here are some tips:

▪︎ Talk to your partner about your concerns. Share what you are comfortable with and what you aren't! Sharing about your ostomy to an intimate partner can be nerve-wracking, especially if they aren't familiar with stomas. Having one, however, does not have anything to do with your worth. Any judgement about your ostomy only speaks about them, not you! ♡

▪︎ Emptying your ostomy just prior to intimate moments can help reduce the likelihood of a leak and can help keep it low-profile.

▪︎ Ostomy wraps or a StomaCloak can help you feel more confident with your stoma, especially if you'd like to take the focus away from it. They can also reduce crinkling noise!

▪︎ If you notice discomfort during intimate moments, seeking help from a pelvic floor therapist can be extremely beneficial! Sometimes these surgeries impact our pelvic floors, and different exercise routines designed by a PFT can help reduce symptoms.
