How California became the second largest rice producing state in the United States was a more complicated tale then I thought it would be... I had to trace the story back to the South Carolina slave trade. The Civil War freed the slaves and the last thing the freed slaves would want to do was to return to the South Carolina marsh rice fields. Post Civil War brought the rice industry to Texas and Louisiana. In Texas and Louisiana, Chinese varieties flourished. California's climate was Mediterranean. Chinese varieties failed.. Japanese varieties had a shorter growing season. Short Grain Japanese varieties would fit into California's climate. How the transfer of knowledge from Japan to Texas to California occurred is the core of our tale....But what if you tried hundreds of Japanese Short Grain varieties and still wanted a more perfect rice seed?
The last chapter deals with the Biggs Rice Experiment Station and how their breeders created Calrose and future new rice varieties.

One important part of my video I did leave out was the persecution of Chinese residents in the Sierra Nevada foothills. After 1870 the number of Chinese residents began to decline. The reason was outrages violence towards Chinese residents. For their safety they left the Sierra Foothills for what they felt would be safer to live in cities. Many left California developing China Towns in New York and other large eastern cities.
