I've always wanted to write stories about the sugarcane train carriages of the 1930s, about
the peasant movement and colonial society. If you couldn't control your life, all your hard
work was in vain and you felt totally helpless.

"The most foolish thing in the world is sending my sugarcane to be weighed by the Japanese
sugar company." People felt such helplessness in those circumstances.
I wrote down this story by the shore of the Jhoushuei River.

A farmer's whole life
He relies on the rice paddy field
A laborer's whole life
He strives to feed his family
My grandpa left words for my father
To be frugal, to be industrious, to be assiduous and diligent
Waiting for a new era to come

The wages of the sugar company were not much
But I still needed to live my life
If I lost my direction in life, I would be working for nothing
Taking care of the sugarcane fields for the company
I grew a future and affection for my children
How come the pineapples I grew turned into watermelons
How come the bottle gourds I grew turned into luffa gourds
How can I live my life?
