The problem with these common and current practices in that they often fall short of the required elements for it to be meaningful. As we defined in the previous video, Recognition at Work is; Efforts that organizations make to provide appreciable, timely, and authentic acknowledgment of an employee’s behavior, effort, or results that supports the organization's goals and values.

This means the efforts that managers and supervisors make must hit all three aspects:
The manager needs to provide recognition that is varied in form and understood by everyone as a message of appreciation, show recognition in the moment or as soon as is practical, and be willing to take the time required to make meaningful connection to those you work with.
When Recognition is not appreciable the message can get lost or be unclear about its intention. If someone does not use varying forms of recognition and they rely on a single method of expression, for example saying “thank you”, then it can become common response, rather then a meaningful expression of appreciation.
When Recognition is not timely, it can seem like an afterthought. If a manager waits until the yearly BBQ to say, “thank you everyone for your hard work this year”, it is not likely that the employees will connect this thank you to the hard work they did during a specific time of the year. Which can make the expression of appreciation seem hollow.
When Recognition is not Authentic, it does not convey appreciation, it is simply a confirmation that something happened. If there is no sincere connection, they are just statements without meaning.

The challenge with showing recognition and appreciation in the workplace is that most of the time it is not a lack of desire to show people how much they are valued, it is often that the effort made, even sincere effort, sometimes are not understood as such. This create a communication breakdown that can be the root cause of many workplace conflicts.
People will often have a preference in how they would like to receive recognition, and in turn, will use that same preference to show recognition to others.
