How ancient Chinese people made rafts from goat skins.

Did you know that more than 2,000 years ago, the Chinese already knew how to use goat hides to make rafts?
First, they chose male goat skins and carefully removed them without tearing. Then, the hides were left under the sun for several days until they began to smell — at that point, removing the hair became easy. Next, the openings at the neck, legs, and other small gaps were sewn shut with hemp thread.
Before sealing the last hole, the craftsman sprinkled a large amount of coarse salt inside to prevent air from leaking through the skin. After that, they blew air into the hide to inflate it, then added a mixture of oil and water to make the skin both flexible and durable. Once the final hole was sewn shut, a complete goat-skin float was created. This float was left outdoors until it turned reddish-brown, at which point it could be inflated and arranged in a 4-5-4 pattern to form a raft.
During storage, the goat-skin raft needed to be watered daily to prevent cracking and exposed to just enough sunlight to avoid rotting. Even today, this unique type of raft is still used to serve tourists in many places.
