What is FDR's New Deal? It's his package of legislation aimed at pulling the U.S. out of the Great Depression in the 1930's. The New Deal was organized into the 3 R's of Relief, Recovery & Reform. It reformed some of the institutions that contributed to start of the Great Depression such as the banking industry and Wall Street by creating things like FDIC and the Securities and Exchange Commission. It also put people back to work by creating federally funded jobs in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Public Works Administration (PWA), the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and the many others. Direct relief was given to people through the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). Some parts of the New Deal, such as the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) and the National Industrial Recovery Act (NRA), were struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional. This angered FDR who then threatened to add 6 more justices to the SC, creating enormous controversy in what is known as the 'Court Packing Scandal'. FDR also created the Social Security Administration (SSA) to create a social safety net to the millions of aging Americans. Ultimately the New Deal was very controversial and didn't really end the depression. It did however, fundamentally change the size, scope, and role of government, and drastically change how we view and relate to both the president and our federal government. FDR became one of our most polarizing political figures. You have to decide whether he was a hero or a villain...or in all likelihood, something in-between.
