Visceral leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease. Every year there are approximately 200, 000 - 400, 000 new cases, mainly occurring in poor rural regions. Ninety percent of these cases are in the following countries in East Africa, South America and South Asia: Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nepal, Sudan, and South Sudan.
