Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Support (RELOS) Explained

Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Support (RELOS) is a defence cooperation arrangement between countries that allows their armed forces to mutually access logistics facilities such as fuel, food, repair, maintenance, transportation, and medical support during joint exercises, training missions, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations, and port visits.

RELOS agreements enhance interoperability, operational readiness, and strategic cooperation among partner nations by reducing costs and improving efficiency. Instead of creating new bases, countries can use each other’s existing infrastructure on a reciprocal and reimbursable basis.

For India, RELOS plays a crucial role in strengthening defence diplomacy, ensuring faster military response, expanding maritime reach, and supporting missions in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
