I transcribed the notes by ear, arranged it for solo piano, and recorded it for my own learning experience, which I share.

This is one of my favorite pieces by John Williams. The mention of William's name is so cliche that it makes some cringe; film music and John Williams are so ubiquitous. But he deserves every bit of it. He's still one of the very best at this evolved "classic orchestral scoring" style.

As we see in this piece, his language is immense. I'd say there are about 4-5 different things going on here. The first is the curious sound in the beginning, a sort of stasis around C. The second is an octatonic flourish that has an electronic sound in the actual piece and is a bit odd in character (measures 5-6 and so forth). Third is the precious, toy piano sound that represents the innocence of the child in the film (mm. 8, A). It is sprinkled with "odd" meter changes and sometimes ends with a bit of chromaticism. The fourth is the distant melody that finally comes in (mm. 32, C).

The piece is very peculiar and precious. It is in C and is so simple yet contains some very interesting octatonic/bitonal riffs/melodies. These help evoke the confused yet innocent robotic child find his destination in this futuristic universe.
