This live concert is a tribute to Township music and a celebration of the vibrant musical culture of Mahlasela’s hometown in Mamelodi, South Africa.

‘Shebeen Queen’ is dedicated to Mahlasela’s late grandmother Ida, “The Shebeen Queen.” With the murder of her husband in 1961, Ida was forced to open a shebeen in her home, brewing homemade beer to provide for Vusi’s family. “She was and still is my greatest hero” he says.

Shebeen Queen was recorded live at the Shebeen Queen’s house on 15 September, 2018 in Mamelodi.
