Africa 2024: Youth Protests, Liberation-Era Parties Shaken, Civil War & The Ouster of West

From elections to political instability, from global summits to worsening regional conflicts, 2024 has been a mixed bag for Africa. Youths in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria turned streets into warzones, protesting against government measures amid rising economic troubles. The year also saw the beginning of discontent against liberation-era parties in several countries. In South Africa, the ruling ANC suffered a major setback and lost majority after 30 years in power. Voters in Botswana also rejected the ruling Botswana Democratic Party after 58 years in power. In Mozambique, protests continue as the top court upholds the victory of the ruling Frelimo Party which the opposition contests. The collapse of the West's influence in West Africa spilled over from 2023 into 2024 with junta-led states of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger evicting US and French forces. Chad and Senegal too have turned against France. The Sudan Civil War continues to be prolonged with "foreign interference". Equatorial Guinea's high-profile sex-tape scandal also made one of the biggest headlines in Africa in 2024.
