The FTC has recently taken steps to address deceptive advertising on social media and deceptive dark patterns. The Commission issued orders to eight social media and video streaming platforms, requiring them to produce information about how they screen for and restrict commercial ads that are deceptive or expose consumers to scams or frauds. The FTC also has released a report analyzing how companies use dark patterns to deceive or manipulate consumers, and the FTC’s efforts to combat the use of dark patterns. We will explore these developments together.
