Learn how to calculate the square footage of your room with a few simple measurements. In this video, we show the exact formulas you need to find the amount of flooring or wall material, like paint or wallpaper, you'll need for your project. We review calculations for the square footage of the floor, the walls, and the ceiling.

From the Clairrow course "Fundamentals: Measure & Space Plan". This is the bonus video in the module "Calculating Square Footage" (Module 5 of 5).

With your room's measurements in hand, you can easily calculate the square footage of your space. This is the unit of measure required to estimate project materials like flooring, wallpaper or paint.

Note that one gallon of paint covers an estimated 350 square feet of wall. But, this may depend on the quality of your paint. If you are using a lower quality paint, it may take more than one gallon of paint to fully cover 350 square feet with one coat. We recommend splurging for a nicer quality paint, if doable – it actually will save you time, effort, and (usually!) money in the long run.
