March 6, 1945. Cologne is the first major German city to fall to the Allies. Stalin plans to conquer Berlin before the other Allies arrive. To encourage the Germans to persevere, the Wochenschau stokes up fear of the Red Army. Hitler has hundreds of opponents of the regime murdered. He gives orders to leave behind nothing but “scorched earth”– only a few fanatical Nazis comply. The Allies successfully cross the Rhine. The Red Army conquers Poznań and Königsberg; their next destination is Berlin.
