One such remarkable piece is the 1948 Packard Station Sedan Woodie, paired with a teardrop camper that has been customized to match its styling. This rare duo has recently surfaced on the market, drawing attention from collectors and enthusiasts alike.

To understand why this Packard is so special, we have to revisit the post-war automotive era. In the late 1940s, wood-bodied vehicles, known as “woodies,” were still in demand, though their popularity was already beginning to fade. Packard, one of the leading luxury carmakers at the time, offered the Station Sedan between 1948 and 1950. While it wasn’t a full wood-bodied vehicle, it did feature wood inserts around the windows, lower doors, and tailgate, giving it a distinctive and stylish flair.

The 1948 Packard Station Sedan originally sold for $3,425, which translates to nearly $47,000 in today’s money. However, despite its elegance, it never became a mainstream hit. In fact, only 3,885 examples were produced over its three-year run, and less than 20 have been seen at major auctions in recent years. That makes this surviving example an extremely rare find.

What makes this particular Packard even more interesting is the matching teardrop camper it tows. While Packard never officially produced such trailers, the custom-built camper has been designed to mirror the look of the Station Sedan, complete with blue paint, matching wheels, and even wood trim to echo the car’s details. Although some critics might argue the camper looks slightly cheaper compared to the Packard’s craftsmanship, the pairing creates a quirky and charming travel-ready duo.

The vehicle recently surfaced on Facebook Marketplace in West Lafayette, Indiana. Both the car and trailer appear to be in very good condition. The exterior dark blue paint shines from bumper to bumper, while the wood inserts look remarkably well-preserved. Inside, there are signs of weathering, but overall, the Packard presents itself as a strong collectible candidate.

There is, however, a mystery regarding the odometer. The Packard’s dash shows only 11,133 miles, but experts doubt this reflects its true mileage. Given its history and restoration work, it’s far more likely that the odometer rolled over once, meaning the actual mileage is closer to 111,330. Even so, this doesn’t diminish the car’s value—it remains a rare and desirable classic.

Under the hood, this Station Sedan packs a 288-cubic-inch inline-eight engine rated at 135 horsepower when new. While modest by today’s standards, it was considered adequate performance for a stylish family vehicle of its era.

As for the camper, it’s believed to be a more recent build compared to the Packard. The craftsmanship is good overall, with the wood trim likely made of lower-cost materials such as plastic, but the fit and finish are neat, and it completes the retro traveling aesthetic.

Financially, this duo has had an interesting journey. Back in 2017, it failed to sell at $35,000, but in 2021, it found a new home for $33,600. Now, it’s back on the market with a $55,000 asking price. Considering that pristine Packard Station Sedans alone can fetch anywhere between $30,000 and $80,000 at auction, this combo certainly falls within the ballpark of collectability.

So, the question remains: would you pay $55,000 for a piece of post-war Americana that blends luxury car heritage with camping charm? One thing is for sure—this Packard Woodie with its matching teardrop camper is not just transportation, it’s a conversation starter, a showstopper, and a rolling piece of history.
