The Yugoslav squad found themselves in a rather strong qualifying group with up and coming Netherlands squad (who had Ajax 3x European Cup winners) and also East Germany. They started with Rajko Mitic as a coach but soon after a difficult start they had to switch to a then young Vujadin Boskov fellow.

Under Boskov, Yugoslavia managed to win against both of the rivals in their direct duels and advance to the quarter-finals. There, they were drawn against Soviet Union. After a 0-0 match in Belgrade, they were narrowly defeated 3:0 in Moscow and thus it ended their chances to go to the Euros. No doubt Boskov was still a young but attractive coach and this team would certainly have its own saying if it managed to qualify to the final 4 of the tournament.

Maybe if it wasn't for the rather stupid rule that football players who turned 28 could leave the country and transfer to another club - but then not perform for the National Team - the Yugoslav team was stripped of:
