PART ONE of the closet built-ins COMPLETE 👏

I can already tell this space is going to be SO MUCH MORE functional! Here are a few more details about each step:

Removing carpet: I used a utility knife to remove the carpet and padding underneath. Easy breezy!

Creating the base: I opted for 2x6s since that would create a base that matched the height of our current trim. That way, our trim could lay over it perfectly. You could use 2x4s or whatever size you prefer!

Thrifted dresser: This dresser was thrifted for $30, which was far cheaper than building my own. It was about the general size I was looking for, so I just tweaked my plans to make it work for the project.

Shelving: I used 3/4-inch birch plywood for the shelves.

Shelving supports: I used 1x2s for the shelf supports, nailing them into the wall for the shelves to rest on, and then nailed the shelves to the supports from the top.

Framing the shelves: I used 1x2 pine for the frame because it’s pretty and smooth.

Primer: I always use an oil-based primer on wood that has been previously stained (like this dresser); it prevents the old stain from showing through the paint later. I used regular primer for the rest of the build since it’s cheaper.
