Swisscube-1 - Still Going Strong In 2019. Video of Swisscube-1 satellite CW beacon signal using WebSDR station in Johannesburg, south Africa. I am fascinated with the fact that average citizens can design, build, and have launched into orbit, satellites for scientific and communications purposes. I am even more amazed that these satellites design with a life cycle of months to a couple of years, perform well past their design operational expectancy. Swisscube-1 was launched into orbit in 2009 and is still sending signals and operational today in 2019. It has the distinction of being the oldest operating European cubesat design satellite. However 2020 could be its last operational year as it will be part of a space debris recovery project where it will be captured and taken to a higher orbit.
