Joe Biden may be in the process of ending the 20 year occupation of Afghanistan, but in other parts of the world, the forever war against terrorism rages on. Is this the beginning of the end of George Bush’s global “War on Terror,” or is it just the end to one discrete conflict? Or will ISIS-K and the neocon’s return pull him back in?

It was a truism for many years that “politics stops at the water’s edge,” meaning that although Democrats and Republicans disagree on issues of domestic affairs, when it comes to foreign policy everyone is on the same page. At the moment, it appears almost like Joe Biden is breaking that paradigm, but let’s not kid ourselves. Both Dems and the GOP remain committed to U.S. global hegemony and the kinds of “world policing” actions we’ve grown numb to over the past 30 years.

Joe Biden disagrees with the elite consensus about Afghanistan, that much can be proved just by watching CNN for 5 minutes, but otherwise he remains committed to the ideals of American Exceptionalism that under gird the public relations of the U.S. empire. Who knows how they’ll spin the end of the Afghan occupation to serve their imperialist ends, but don’t be surprised if the government you hear most about during and after the withdrawal is China. “She Goes Not Abroad in Search of Monsters to Destroy” has truly become “Look everywhere for monsters, because Lockheed needs a reason to build more bombs and pump their stock price.”

Max has been involved in anti-war, anti-racist and radical movements since joining Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in Wisconsin in the 1960s. He was a founder of the War Times/Tiempo de Guerras bilingual tabloid project in the months after 9/11 and is currently an editor of Organizing Upgrade. He is the author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che, re-released by Verso Books in 2018 with a new Foreword by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza.
