“Why are you sitting in my car… with the door closed?”

She stared at her hands, then up at him, breath unsteady.

“I just turned 18,” she said softly.
“And this was the only place I felt like I could think.”

He opened the driver’s side door slowly, careful not to spook her.

“You could’ve waited inside,” he murmured.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t want anyone else to hear me leave or see me walk over. And your car felt… safe. Quiet.”

He sat down next to her, the small space suddenly warm with unspoken tension.

“Alright,” he said quietly.
“Tell me what’s going on.”

Sarah hesitated, fingers tracing the stitching on the seat.

“I didn’t mean to make it weird,” she whispered.
“I just needed somewhere to gather myself before talking to you. Somewhere close… but private.”

He looked over at her, softer than she expected.

“It’s not weird,” he said.
“It just made me wonder what you were afraid to say.”

She finally turned her eyes toward him.

“That I’m not a kid anymore,” she said.
“And I don’t want you to treat me like one.”

The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable —
just full of the truth she’d been trying to say the entire night.
