The Industry Champion Award has been created to recognise true altruism in the music business, particularly where individuals or companies have given support to those who needed it most - whether it be artists, managers, or fans. This year, the MMF and FAC were humbled to honour the team behind One Love Manchester.
The One Love Manchester concert was held on the 4th June 2017 at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Greater Manchester, following the horrific attack where a bomb was detonated at the end of an Ariana Grande concert. 22 people died and 250 were injured.
The concert was announced a mere 4 days after the attack and arranged within two weeks - with Ariana and her manager Scooter Braun working alongside Simon Moran (SJM Concerts) and Melvin Benn (Festival Republic). 50,000 tickets were made available, selling out in 6 minutes, with those who attended the original Ariana concert offered free tickets.
The concert was aired live on BBC One in the UK, broadcast live to a further 50 countries, and streamed on various platforms including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. It was also simultaneously broadcast on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio Manchester, as well as on Capital FM.
Along with performances from Ariana herself, a host of other stars also appeared including Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Take That, Imogen Heap, the Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Little Mix, Marcus Mumford, Niall Horan, Pharrell Williams, Robbie Williams and Liam Gallagher.
The We Love Manchester fund (established by Manchester City Council and The British Red Cross) received £2.35 million during the broadcast, and final figures have since put the total at £17 million. Grande also donated all the proceeds from a re-release of her song One Last Time, and a live recording of her performing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. The money will go towards helping the victims and their families.
Ariana, Scooter, Melvin and Simon need not only be applauded for their heroic effort in putting the concert together, but also in showing young fans that concerts are not a scary place. It is a true testament to the healing power of music.
Special mention and thanks also goes out to Selina Emeny, Kelly Chappel and Sharon Reuben, without whom One Love would not have been such a success.
The Award not only honoured the organisers of One Love Manchester, but also remembered those who so needlessly lost their lives.
