FIRST IMPRESSIONS REVIEW:

So here's my first impressions of these $25 IEMs which still smell strangely like some kind of cake or brownie.

First of all, ergonomically these earphones are badly designed. They have a very very wide nozzle and will be unsuitable for people with smaller outer ears, and there are a number of very sharp metal edges on the earpiece, especially around the wider 'drum' of the earpiece, which scratch the inside of the ear. I've worked out how to consistently get a fit with these earphones (it's a bit fiddly) but this means that it rubs against the tender flesh of my poor right inner ear. Booooo ;__;

In terms of sound, these are interesting. They certainly have a clean and aggressive sound to them. They certainly sound good for the price.

Two things stand out. The bass is very strong, particularly in the sub-bass, to the point where the bass actually can sound uncontrolled or overbearing on certain tracks - basically whenever there is any kind of strong sub-bass content. I think some people will actually kind of love this bass response, though personally I think it's distracting when it really kicks in.

The other thing that stands out is a raw forwardness in the upper mids, which gives everything a sort of splashy aggressive sound. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of thing, though it does add to the impression of detail / soundstage that the Xiaomi projects.

Just based on some comparisons with the Panasonic Ergofit RP-HJE125, I think the Panasonic sounds more neutral - it certainly isn't as aggressive in the treble or the bass. At the same time the Panasonic sounds less clean and more congested - this is probably equal parts the result of having less mid/treble detail emphasis, and also just being less of a technical performer.

At this point I feel like it's a tough call on what to spend your $25 bucks on - the Xiaomi seems like the better earphone in terms of acoustic design but the unrestrained bass and mids dampen my enthusiasm for it.

Both sound surprisingly good for the money, though I still feel like you'd be better off spending a bit more and getting things like the VSD-3 or the Havi B3 Pro 1 - especially since ergonomically, those earphones are much easier to recommend.
