The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is considered the world’s worst industrial disaster. It occurred on the night of 2–3 December 1984 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.
🔴 What Happened
A toxic gas called Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant.
Around 40 tons of poisonous gas spread over the city while people were asleep.
Safety systems at the plant were non-functional or poorly maintained.
☠️ Impact
Immediate deaths: About 3,000–8,000 people died within days.
Long-term deaths: Over 15,000–25,000 deaths over the years.
Affected population: More than 5 lakh (500,000) people.
Survivors suffered from:
Respiratory diseases
Eye damage and blindness
Cancer
Birth defects and genetic disorders
⚖️ Responsibility & Justice
Union Carbide’s CEO Warren Anderson was arrested but later released and never returned to India.
In 1989, Union Carbide paid $470 million as compensation, widely criticized as inadequate.
In 2010, some Indian officials were convicted with light sentences, leading to public outrage.
🌍 Environmental Damage
Toxic waste left at the factory site continues to pollute soil and groundwater.
Even today, nearby residents suffer from contaminated water.
