Lesson Description:
We learn about programming languages and their purposes.
Terminology:
Programming Language - A language used to control the behavior of a computer, often to organize, process, or manipulate data.
Binary - The official definition of binary is "relating to, using, or expressed in a system of numerical notation that has 2 rather than 10 as a base". We're in the beginner stages of learning, so it will be easier for you to think of binary as "the 1's and 0's that make up the lowest level of all computer instructions and computer data". In a later unit, we'll explore this concept in much more detail.
Compiling - The step that turns instructions written in human-readable programming languages into computer-readable instructions. For now, that's all you need to know. Later on, we'll learn how compiling and interpreting slightly differ in their approaches to make human-readable code into computer-readable instructions.
Interpreting - The step that turns instructions written in human-readable programming languages into computer-readable instructions. For now, that's all you need to know. Later on, we'll learn how compiling and interpreting slightly differ in their approaches to turn human-readable code into computer-readable instructions.
JavaScript - A programming language, originally created in 1995. Intentionally designed to be used for webpages in web browsers. Starting in the late-2000s, it became straightforward and common to also use JavaScript outside of web browsers.
C - A programming language, originally created in the 1972. Used almost everywhere nowadays. C later influenced the design and development of popular programming languages such as Python, Rust, Go, Java, PHP, JavaScript and others.
Python - A programming language, originally created in 1991. Commonly used for data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence
