Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed up to 38 areas in New South Wales are being regarded as natural disaster areas – warning the severe weather event is expected to continue.

“The situation is evolving, the heavy rainfall is going to be continuing,” she said.

“I want to stress to the community that the NSW government is taking a very holistic approach, all of our agencies are working together.”

The premier also spruiked the disaster relief payments which will allow households affected by the floods to claim up to $1,000 per adult and up to $400 per child.

“Some communities battered by the bushfires are now being battered by the floods and deep drought prior to that and I don't know any time in a state history where we have had these extreme weather conditions in such quick succession in the middle of a pandemic,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“They are challenging times for NSW but I think we've also demonstrated our capacity to be resilient, but I know for many people, they will feel like it is a breaking point when you've been through three or four incidents which are life changing on top of each other.

“Please know that we are thinking of you and getting support as much as we can."
