Today we're going to be looking at the Rode Videomic Pro. The Rode Videomic Pro is one of the most popular recording devices on the planet. The Rode Videomic Pro is an on camera shotgun mic that improves the quality of audio being recorded directly to your camera. Lets take a closer look at the Rode Videomic Pro we are reviewing.

The Rode Videomic Pro is more compact than its cousin, the Rode Videomic, and is about 6.5 inches long. The front of the Rode Videomic Pro has this foam windscreen mounted to its plastic body. The plastic body of the Rode Videomic Pro is suspended from rubber, shock-isolating cords which attach to the Videomic’s standard shoe mount. The Rode Videomic Pro has a ⅜ inch female mic adapter thread on the bottom of the shoe mount so you can mount the mic to a boom pole or a mic stand. The Rode Videomic pro is powered by a 9V battery that is tucked into a compartment on the front of the mic. Since the Rode Videomic Pro consumes very little power, this battery will give you several months of continuous use before you need to replace it. The output from the Rode Videomic Pro is through a 3.5mm right angled connector at the end of a short wire. Now the length of this wire is more than enough to connect to any camera when the Rode Videomic Pro is mounted on the camera. However, if you need to mount the camera farther away, Rode sells a 10ft extension cable that is designed to work with the Rode VideoMic Pro.

Connecting the Rode Video Mic Pro is really easy. The Rode Video mic Pro plugs into the 3.5mm input port on your camera and mounts to the hot shoe mount on your DSLR or camcorder. And you can turn the Rode Videomic Pro on using the buttons on the back of the Rode Videomic Pro . When the Rode Videomic Pro is on, the indicator LED turns green. Now, the indicator will remain green most of the time but will turn red if the battery is about to run out. The rode videomic pro is a directional mic, so it has a much stronger audio pickup from what it is pointed at and a much weaker pickup from all other sources. So its a good idea to have the Rode Videomic Pro pointed directly at the subject you’re looking to get audio from. We’ve also noticed that getting the Rode Videomic Pro as close as possible to the subject, produces the best quality recordings.
