What's the Difference between Power Adapter Wattage and Power Delivery Wattage?

Honestly with a Docking Station, the Wattage of the Power Adapter it comes with doesn't matter to your Workstation Environment but what it says about the Power Delivery does!

The Power Adapter Wattage matters if you're plugging it directly into your compatible laptop, you want your Adapter to be powerful enough to supprt your laptops capabilities to do all the work you want to on your system without overheating or system damage.

If you are using a USB 3 laptop - without USB C or Thunderbolt 3 power delivery support this post is moot. You'll need to plug in your own laptop's power adapter even while ut's docked anyway. USB 3 or USB A 3.0 / 2.0 does not support Power Delivery or self Charging. Save yourself the rest of this read.

When connected to a dock the power Wattage of the Power Adapter is distributed between what the dock itself needs to work, power to the other outputs then FINALLY Power Delivery.

With a Docking Station, the USB C or Thunderbolt 3 Power Delivery is what you want to look at if you intend on using it to also Charge your laptop while Docked!

Unlike cellphones, using an undercharging device won't charge the laptop slower while docked and in use - it just won't charge at all because it can potentially damage your system (we don't want to be in the hook for that!). This is different from seeing that your docked laptop IS Charging but you're getting a warning sign claiming you're "potentially using an adapter" that's under Charging your device. Those messages that come up when your laptop is in fact Charging is the manufacturer's scare method to get you to want to just use their own brands with their own products. You can proceed mostly without worry.

Most reputable manufacturers are building their laptops so that it won't charge at all if you're using an undercharging device, this is smart, it protects your laptop.

Which is why you need to know how much power your laptop requires to function well and make sure the POWER DELIVERY WATTAGE not the Power Adapter Wattage, can support that! It'll save you time, money & hassle.
