Today I'm exploring something a little different... The personification of Britannia!

She began as a Roman invention, a conquered figure carved in stone, writhing beneath an emperor’s heel. Over centuries, Britannia transformed into a goddess of Empire, a symbol of unity, naval supremacy, and national identity. But who was she really? And why does she still appear on our coins, our banknotes, our awards, and in our politics?

In this episode, I trace the journey of Britannia from ancient myth to modern meaning, exploring her origins in Greek geography, her Roman evolution, and role in the British Empire. From the Aphrodisias frieze in Turkey to modern bullion coins and Britpop, Britannia is more than a symbol, she’s a story Britain continues to tell about itself.
