STORYLINE:

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with US Army Chief of Staff James McConville in Jakarta on Friday with an aim to strengthen security ties between the countries.

The visit comes amid growing Chinese maritime activity in the Indo-Pacific region.

At a news briefing after their meeting, McConville advised that the countries would continue to "work closely together."

"We all share the same interest for the region - peace, security, stability," he added.

"I think we will continue on this common interest to maintain this cooperation, so it's nothing new," added Subianto.

McConville arrived in Jakarta late Thursday after a visit to the Philippines where he had also met with officials.

His visit to Indonesia comes a day after leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations met in Labuan Bajo on Indonesia’s Flores island.
