Roman soldier Longinus, a historical biblical figure who pierced the side of Jesus Christ on the cross with his holy spear. This Roman centurion witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus on Calvary, when he pierced the Holy Lance (also known as the Lance of Destiny or Lance of Longinus) into Christ's flank, from which water and blood gushed out. According to Catholic and Orthodox Christian tradition, Longinus converted to Christianity after this divine moment and later became a saint.
