Cagliari is the largest city in Sardinia and one of the most beautiful port cities in the Mediterranean. Cagliari boasts one of the longest coastlines in Italy: Poetto is famous for its 13 km long and excellent sandy beach.

Its climate is typically Mediterranean, and even subtropical due to its proximity to Africa, which is supported by its special vegetation, huge trees and flowers. In its botanical garden we can find wonderful orchids, hibiscuses, palms, special subtropical plants, and in the marshes we can also admire a flamingo reserve.

Attractions
Cagliari was built on seven hills, which today form the city's individual districts: Castello, Tuvu Mannu, Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di Bonaria, Colle di San Michele.

Its atmospheric port district is full of old authentic taverns. The old town has charming streets, colorful houses, small stone churches, but there are also many shops, typical restaurants, cafes, and ice cream parlors.

The oldest part of the city lies on the Castello hilltop, from which a magnificent view of the Bay of Cagliari opens. Most of the city walls are still completely intact and are reinforced by two 13th-century white limestone towers, the Sant Pacras and the Elephant Tower. This locally quarried limestone is the raw material for the city wall and many old city buildings.

One of the main attractions of the old town is the huge Terrazo Umberto I. The cafe-terrace building, designed using the S. Remy bastion, offers a different panorama of the city and the bay from every point. The Saint Remy bastion was built at the end of the 19th century on the city's 14th-century walls.

The cathedral opens up to us from Piazza Palazzo. The three-nave, Pisan Romanesque church was consecrated in 1257 in honor of the Virgin Mary. The portal of the left aisle has survived intact from the 13th century. In the cathedral museum, in addition to relics from the 12th-14th centuries, we can also see the extremely valuable 16th-century triptych of Pope Clement I by Gérard David.

The National Archaeological Museum in Cagliari presents the largest archaeological collection on the island, especially its basalt, terracotta and bronze sculptures.

An outstanding monument of Roman rule is the Roman amphitheater, which is unique in the world in that it was carved into the local limestone rocks. The largest ancient monument on the entire island, built in the 2nd century, according to Pliny, could accommodate 15,000 spectators. The amphitheater is still the venue for concerts and opera performances in the summer.

The city is home to some controversial examples of fascist neoclassicism from the 1930s, such as the Palazzo della Giustizia, the Palace of Justice. Near the building is a large park with pine trees and artificial lakes. Part of the park rises to a hill, from which there is a great view of the Castello, the bay and the surrounding marshes.

The Torre di S. Pancrazio, a fortress tower completed in 1305 by the Sardinian military engineer Johannes Capula, together with the Elephant Tower, is the most beautiful medieval monument of Sardinian castle architecture. Passing through the passage of the former barracks next to it, we reach the Citadella dei Musei.

The largest market hall in Cagliari, the Mercato, is located on Via Tizian. Here you can buy vegetables, fruit, fish, shellfish, cheeses and other delicacies.
