In a landmark decision, an Indian anti-corruption court has sentenced 14 individuals, including a former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and senior police officials, to life imprisonment in a high-profile Bitcoin extortion case. The verdict, delivered in Ahmedabad, brings to a close a sensational 2018 case that exposed a deep-seated nexus of crime, politics, and law enforcement.


The case centered around the kidnapping of Surat-based businessman Shailesh Bhatt, a cryptocurrency trader. According to the prosecution, a group of individuals, led by former BJP MLA Nalin Kotadiya and then-Amreli Superintendent of Police Jagdish Patel, conspired to extort cryptocurrency from Bhatt after learning he had amassed a significant amount of Bitcoin. The group, which included 11 police officers, abducted Bhatt and his associate, subjecting them to illegal detention and assault to force the transfer of a substantial amount of Bitcoin and cash.



The court found the accused guilty of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping for ransom, illegal detention, and extortion. The judgment noted that the convicts, especially the public servants, had abused their positions and undermined the judicial system. The case was particularly complex due to the nature of the crime and the reluctance of some witnesses, with a large number of them turning hostile during the trial. The court, however, relied on testimonies, digital records, and other evidence to establish the guilt of the accused, sending a strong message against corruption and the abuse of power.




This verdict is a significant development in India's legal landscape, marking one of the first major criminal cases involving cryptocurrency to reach such a conclusion. It not only highlights the growing prevalence of crypto-related crimes but also demonstrates the Indian judiciary's resolve to address new forms of digital-age offenses, particularly when they involve public officials.
