In April 2024 we walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela as a family of five.
Camino Update Day #17
When you get the bunk bed right next to the community bathroom you learn a lot about people’s nighttime habits. Again, probably not worth paying extra for, but if you like midnight excitement, it’s for you!
Ended up just sleeping in my hiking clothes, you never know when the last time any bedding was washed. And by this point, the pilgrim smell has fully permeated everything.
We got up and out the door about 7:30, Tanzen struggling. After 10 km we made it to a village and stopped at a pharmacy, and then had to take her to the medical center. Pink eye. Back to the pharmacy for eye drops and the grocery store for lunch and dinner.
We stopped at the Santuario de la Virgen Peregrina, a famous church on the Camino. They gave us certificates for visiting the church as pilgrims, and finishing half of the Camino beginning from St. Jean.
We did another 10 km to Bercianos del Gran Camino and stopped at our albergue. We have a family room here, but paid extra for the disposable sheets. Essentially, a paper fitted sheet and pillow cover (which nearly did us in trying to get it on without tearing it). Looks like we will be sleeping in our hiking clothes again!
Once we make it to our lodgings, our custom is to find grass and sit around, or let the kids play. Also reading through books of poetry by Shel Silverstein.
Number of articles of clothing that one of our children has managed to wear backwards in a very uncomfortable fashion: 3
Number of steps: 29,311
Next stop: Mansilla de las Mulas
Percentage Completed: 54.2%
