Crazy that Lil Xan is still only 28. The Redlands, Cali-born Mexican-American has been part of pop culture since he was a teenager, having come up in the mid-2010s SoundCloud / Emo Rap wave alongside artists like Juice WRLD, Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, and Trippie Redd, to name a few. It was a scene and era that was characterized, not only by genre, but also a lifestyle of conspicuous consumption, courting controversy, and the pursuit of numbness.

Lil Xan broke in 2017 thanks to his track ‘Betrayed’ — ironically an anti-Xanax anthem, but Xan, or Diego as he was named by his parents, became synonymous with the glorification of the prescription drug. The chaos of addiction and fame soon superseding his musical output and cultural clout.

The artist we meet for the first time here is in a totally different place: three years (Cali) sober, raw-dogging life and working on how to negotiate that and this new chapter’s impact on his work. Listen to his latest album Diego for a glimpse into Lil Xan 2.0.
